The 2017 Mindcrack Marathon, also known as Mindcrack Marathon EVOLVED, was a 48 hour livestream marathon held by Mindcrack on 13-15 October 2017 in San Francisco, California to raise money for Extra Life, in support of Children's Miracle Network Hospitals in their treatment and care of children afflicted by life threatening illness and injury. This was the fourth Mindcrack Marathon for Extra Life, and fifth overall, following the one held in October of the previous year.

The fall marathon followed on from their second spring charity event, a charity livestream of UHC #ForTheKidsSeven earlier that year. The addition of "Evolved" to the title referred to the expansion of its roster from previous years with a number of guests, some of whom would become regulars in both future marathons and Mindcrack as a group. The increased focus on guests and a high production quality helped the marathon become Mindcrack's most successful charity event until the 2021 Mindcrack Marathon.

Background[edit]

Starting on 14 September, the Mindcrack Twitter posted a series of GIFs showing segments from previous marathons.[1] The marathon date was officially announced in a video posted on 15 September.[2] The Mindcrack Community Discord also opened to the public on 15 September,[3] with discussions on the marathon soon starting. Mhykol revealed in the Discord that there would be a preshow before the main marathon,[4] and that the marathon would be at a new location.[5] The Minecraft donor server went live on 21 September for $10+ donors.[6] A list of attending Mindcrackers and Friends was Tweeted out by Mindcrack one at a time from 5-6 October,[7] followed by a video covering the marathon's connection with Extra Life.[8] On 8 October the preshow was announced to start at 1PM, running for 8 hours.[9] The marathon schedule was partially posted on the website on 11 October, subsequently getting updated with the rest of the segments.[10] The first Mindcrackers also started arriving on 11 October.

Attendees[edit]

From 5-6 October Mindcrack posted a list of 16 Mindcrack attendees and 10 Special guests attending the marathon,[11] and that list was used in a video uploaded to Twitch on 9 October.[12]

Nebris, PauseUnpause, RichardHammer, and Strawburry17 were all part of the initial attendee list but were unable to attend in-person. Nebris missed his flight after his car didn't start (rescheduling his flight would've cost $980), while Pause missed his flight due to his flying anxiety.[13]

The final number of attendees was 24, including Chef Andy and Stressmonster101 who weren't part of the attendee list, and not counting staff. Nebris, PauseUnpause, pyrao, and W92Baj also participated in segments remotely.

Segments[edit]

The marathon was streamed on the Mindcrack Twitch channel, and mindcrackmarathon.com embedded the stream alongside active incentives, a schedule, and lists for sponsors and talent. The first half of the marathon schedule was posted on the website on 11 October, featuring local time zones, automatic updating as segments were added or changed, and segments that were crossed out when they ended.[14]

Videos[edit]

On 11 October the Mindcrack Twitter confirmed that the VODs would be highlighted as individual segments and saved in a collection,[15] however the highlights weren't added to the collection until August 2022,[16] and the intro along with several short couch time periods between segments weren't saved. With no highlight made of the full marathon, approximately 3 hours of the marathon are presumed lost.[17]

Incentives[edit]

After the stream started, a list of active incentives was linked to on the donate.n3rds.care site, and donation bars were added on the main site showing totals for pooled incentive funds. Viewers donating at least $10 were given access to a Minecraft donor server which opened to the public on 21 September, and multiple Mindcrackers streamed on it in the weeks leading up to the marathon. The donor server added a Skygrid survival server the day before the marathon on 12 October.[18] Many segments featured a digital wheel spin for certain goals, with preset options specific to each segment.

The studio had a 360 degree camera set up streaming to YouTube for the duration of the marathon, with the stream's URL initially hidden. For every $10,000 raised, one character from the URL was revealed until the full URL was reached. Pepzin was the first viewer to guess the URL and had their name added to the adjacent wall. Due to limitations on streams longer than 12 hours, the VOD was not saved on YouTube.

A new shirt was available during the marathon from Design by Human, with all profits going to Extra Life.[19]

Sponsorships[edit]

CORSAIR, iBuyPower, Marriott, MODX, and Pixel Corps were the marathon sponsors. CORSAIR provided headsets,[20] iBuyPower provided all the PCs used for the UHCs,[21] Marriott provided hotel rooms for the attendees,[22] MODX was used for the marathon site, and Pixel Corps provided the venue, equipment, and staff.[23]

Outcomes and Reception[edit]

$26,225 had already been raised when the pre-show began, of which over $19,000 came from the spring UHC, and $47,288 had been raised when the actual marathon started 7 hours later. The total shown on screen at the end of the stream was $262,829.17, and the incentives site showed a total of $262,964 after the stream,[24] with late donations, Twitch revenue, and shirt sales bringing the total up to an unknown amount later on. During the stream over $8,000 in bits were raised.[25] During October Mindcrack became the highest ranked team for Extra Life.[26]
