Notch, also known by his personal name Markus Persson, is a Swedish game developer most well known for being the creator of Minecraft and the co-founder of Mojang. Notch was whitelisted onto the Mindcrack Server during the 2013 Mindcrack Marathon after donating $10,000 to Child's Play.[1][2][3]

Notch initially joined the server using the NewMindcracker account[4][5] due to login and whitelisting problems.[6] AvidyaZEN, Docm77, SethBling and Dinnerbone were digging the remaining portion of Docm77's perimeter and invited him to join them.[7]

During his time on the server, Notch wrote and signed a book titled Love and Grief,[8][9] mined the final block of Docm77's perimeter using a silk touch pickaxe,[10][11] and was accidentally killed by Docm.[12]

Biography[edit]

Notch was born in Stockholm,[13] Sweden to a Swedish father and Finnish mother.[14] He lived in Edsbyn for the first seven years of his life before his family moved back to Stockholm.[15] He speaks Swedish as his native language and English as a secondary language.[16]

Notch began programming on his father's Commodore 128 home computer at the age of seven.[15] Having experimented with various type-in programs, he produced his first game at the age of eight, a text-based adventure game.[15] Professionally he had worked as a game developer for King.com for over four years, until 2009. Afterwards he worked as a programmer for Jalbum before quitting his job there in June 2010 to focus on the development of Minecraft.[15]

Notch founded Mojäng Specifications, now known simply as Mojang, alongside Carl Manneh and Jakob "JahKob" Porser (FruktHamster) in late 2010. He served as the lead developer of Minecraft before transferring creative authority to Jens Bergensten (jeb_) in December 2011.[17] Notch remained at Mojang as a game developer working on other titles such as Scrolls and 0x10c. In September 2014, Mojang was bought by Microsoft for 2.5 billion dollars.[18] Notch, along with Carl and Jakob, subsequently left Mojang to work on other projects.[19]

Personal life[edit]

On 13 August 2011, Notch married Elin Zetterstrand (otherwise known as ez),[20][21] after becoming engaged in Thailand.[22] On 15 August 2012, Notch announced via Twitter that the two had separated.[23] In December 2014, Notch bought a $70 million home in Beverly Hills, California.[24]

Social outlooks[edit]

Notch has strongly criticized piracy and is a member of the Swedish Pirate Party.[25] He has stated he believes piracy is not theft, but rather copyright infringement.[26][27] He has publicly shared his views on piracy long before Minecraft became popular.[28][29]

Notch is an atheist.[30] In January 2015, Notch stated on Twitter "no sane person blames this on a religion. It's about sick unhealthy individuals,"[31] referring to Islamic extremists that caused 12 deaths during the Charlie Hebdo shooting in France. He has denounced using homosexuality as an insult,[32][33] and has said to creationists "Evolution is real. Get over it."[34]
