The 2016 Mindcrack Marathon was a 48 hour livestream marathon held by Mindcrack (in association with Microsoft) on 21-23 October 2016 in San Francisco, California to raise money for Extra Life, in support of Children's Miracle Network Hospitals in their treatment and care of children afflicted by life threatening illness and injury. This was the third Mindcrack Marathon for Extra Life, and fourth overall, following the one held in November of the previous year.

During the event, two UHC matches were played, known as #ForTheKidsFive and #ForTheKidsSix respectively, following on from Mindcrack's first spring charity event, a charity livestream of #ForTheKidsFour earlier in the year. The marathon added many new features and segments that would become standard for every marathon moving forward. The overall fundraiser goal for the event was $200,000, the same as the previous year.

Background[edit]

The marathon date and location were officially announced by 13 September 2016 when the event was added to the calendar on MindcrackLP.com.[1][2] The Mindcrackers planning to attend were announced in early October, and the marathon schedule was revealed on 14 October.[3] The first Mindcrackers departed for San Francisco on 19 October, with Breon, Guude, Mhykol, Nebris, and Pakratt0013 flying on the same plane.[4] Breon would provide behind the scenes pictures on the Mindcrack Twitter for the duration of the event.[5] Incentives went live on mindcrackmarathon.com over 8 hours before the stream started, and for the first time cumulative incentives were added for everything except hats and shirts.[6]

Attendees[edit]

Guude had initially said that 19 Mindcrackers were going to attend; he named adlingtont, Aureylian, SuperMCGamer, Vechs, and VintageBeef as the only Mindcrackers that wouldn't be.[7] This list was repeated by the Mindcrack Twitter account on 12 October.[8] Aureylian intended to attend but was ruled out by a scheduling conflict.[9] PauseUnpause had also planned to attend but was unable to as he had lost his passport.[10] AnderZEL, AvidyaZEN, kurtmac, and Zisteau were all also unable to make it.

Fourteen Mindcrackers attended the marathon as well as DireDwarf and multiple staff. Adlingtont, Aureylian, CaptainSparklez, kurtmac, PauseUnpause, and Zisteau also participated in segments remotely.

Segments[edit]

The marathon was streamed on the Mindcrack Twitch channel, the first marathon under the new channel name. mindcrackmarathon.com embedded the stream and listed the sponsors, schedule, and incentives. All times given are in Pacific Daylight Time(UTC-07:00).[a]

Videos[edit]

On 18 October the Mindcrack Twitter confirmed that the full VODs and highlights would be saved on the Mindcrack Twitch channel.[11] The full stream was split into two parts, and every segment was highlighted separately within a day of the marathon ending. The first half of the full highlight later disappeared for unknown reasons. Each segment's highlight was renamed in August 2022 for consistency.

Incentives[edit]

A list of stretch goals and incentives was posted on the website before the marathon started, subsequently getting updated during the event.[12] Pooled incentives were added for the first time in the event's history, allowing donors to apply their funds to incentives without needing to have donated the full amount. Viewers donating at least $10 were given access to a Minecraft donor server, and every donation over $500 received a personalized signed card. For every $1 donated, donors received 1 chance to win a Microsoft Surface Pro tablet.

Incentives that were listed on the website but weren't used during the event aren't listed in this table.

Sponsorships[edit]

Microsoft, Oculus, Pixelcorps, Telltale, Jinx, and Skybound were listed as the marathon sponsors. Microsoft provided the location and staff as well as 4 Surface Pro tablets for giveaways, Pixelcorps provided equipment and staff, Telltale provided game keys for giveaways, Oculus lent 12 VR headsets and computers, Jinx gave away $25 gift cards, and Skybound provided SUPERFIGHT packs.

Outcomes and reception[edit]

$18,067 had already been raised when the livestream began, a large portion of which came from UHC #ForTheKidsFour in the spring. At the end of the livestream the total was sitting at $167,459.76, with $167,483.26 being the final known total raised for Extra Life, although that number is missing any Teespring sales and donations that came in after the marathon.

Over 100 gold foil Teespring shirts were sold during the event, with $1,200 from the Teespring campaign being added to the total raised near the end of the marathon.
