JustVan, also known as VanRyderLP, or simply his personal name Van (pronounced Von),[3] is an American Let's Play commentator and close friend of the Mindcrack community. He was a contestant in Surviving Mindcrack Island, participated as a guest in the 2014 Mindcrack Marathon UHC #ForTheKids event, and appeared as a guest of the CrackPack server since June 2016. He has attended numerous conventions with the Mindcrackers, most frequently in 2013 and 2014.

Biography[edit]

Born in Fort Worth, Texas,[4] Van moved regularly during his childhood due to his father's position in the United States Air Force. He has mentioned living in Ohio, North Dakota,[5] and Nevada.[6] Prior to moving to Osaka, Japan in March 2015 (see #Japan), Van lived near Riverside, in Southern California.[7] Van has a degree in English.[8]

His online alias, VanRyder, is derived from his personal name and the name of Tangled character Flynn Rider.[3]

Mindcrack[edit]

Van was introduced to Let's Playing by kurtmac, having discovered him through the Minecraft Wiki. He found Mindcrack via Kurt's participation in UHC season 3.[9][10] Van says he became close friends with Guude and PauseUnpause during the week after MineCon 2012,[11][12] having initially caught Guude's attention with his strong presence on /r/mindcrack.[13][12]

Van appeared as a guest in episode 26 of the Mindcrack Podcast,[14] and earned the custom flair "Ubiquitous" for his prevalence on /r/mindcrack.[15] He attended PAX East 2013, PlayOnCon 2013, VidCon 2013, PAX Prime 2013, the MindCrack Party at MineCon 2013, PlayOnCon 2014, and PAX Prime 2014 with the Mindcrackers. He was unable to attend PAX East 2014, and was planning to attend MineCon 2014 before its postponement.[16]

In August 2013, Van confirmed that he hadn't been invited to join the Mindcrack Server, but vaguely mentioned that he and Guude had discussed his "potential ability to be on the server",[17] referring to his participation in Surviving Mindcrack Island (which was recorded in September 2013, but not released until March 2016). Van served as a staff member of the PlayMindcrack server, responding to support questions via email.[18][19] He joined the 2014 Mindcrack Marathon UHC #ForTheKids event as a guest. In June 2016, Van joined the CrackPack server as a guest.[20]

Personal life[edit]

Answering questions about his sexuality in October 2013, Van says "[he's] not gay", but is "more attracted to personalities and people [over] what people have between their legs".[21] In a YouTube comment, Van said he identifies as pansexual.[22] He has spoken out in support of same-sex marriage.[23]

Van does not like potatoes regardless of how they are prepared.[4][24] He is 5'7".[4] In April 2014, Van said that he is "not religious".[25]

Japan[edit]

On 16 September 2014, Van mentioned via Twitter that he would be applying to teach English in Japan.[26] He announced on 17 December that he had acquired the job,[27] and would be moving to "a fairly small city in between Osaka and Kyoto",[28] starting in April 2015.[29] Van tweeted on 11 March 2015 that his work Visa had been approved.[30] He moved to Japan on 25 March 2015,[31][32] and currently resides in Ibaraki, in Osaka Prefecture, close to both Osaka and Kyoto.[33][34] Van mentioned on 13 March 2016 that he had renewed his Visa for another year.[35]
