Mindcrack Ultra Hardcore

Mindcrack Ultra Hardcore (UHC), previously MindCrack Ultra Hardcore, is a competitive Minecraft PvP event that members of Mindcrack partake in, often featuring friends of the community as guests. The basis of the series, known as "Ultra Hardcore", is that the player can not regain health simply by having a full food bar, requiring golden apples or potions of healing to recover health if damage is taken. Once the player dies, they are out of the game. In most seasons, the objective is to be the longest surviving player or team, while in other seasons, the objective is to be the first team to defeat the Ender Dragon. Guude considers Ultra Hardcore to be a "gentleman's game" and expects people to use common sense when playing the game.

From Season 1 to 7, the Minecraft mod "xxxHardcorexxx Mod" by SBK_x_SiiLeNcE (Jack Beardmore) was used to implement the UHC mode healing, along with some changes to gameplay. Season 8 to 11 used the very similar "Ultra Hardcore" Bukkit plugin by ghowden. The guest appearance of Minecraft developer Dinnerbone in Season 11 saw UHC essentially implemented into Minecraft in 13w23a (full release 1.6.1), through the /spreadplayers command and the naturalRegeneration gamerule. Since Season 12, UHC has typically been played in vanilla Minecraft.

History

UHC was conceived when VintageBeef was watching Guude's hardcore series, in which Guude said he wished health didn't regenerate. Beef contacted Jack Beardmore to create a mod with those gameplay changes. The mod also changed the recipe for golden apples, requiring 8 gold ingots rather than 8 gold nuggets. After an excessive amount of potions of healing were obtained in Season 2, the recipe for a glistering melon (the core ingredient of the potion) was changed to require a block of gold instead of a gold nugget for Season 3. Specific to Guude's server since Season 3, the server sends out a magenta message every 30 minutes to signify the end of an episode. The script was written in Perl right before the season. In Season 4, it was made so that ghasts drop gold ingots instead of ghast tears when killed, to enforce the ban on potions of regeneration. Starting in Season 5 and continuing to Season 7, a sign reading either "Player #" or "Team #" has been positioned at each players starting location.

From Season 8, a Bukkit plugin based on the original mod has been used. Since Season 9, players heads drop upon death. Unlike some other popular plugins, the heads can not be crafted into "golden heads" for further healing. In Season 11, the length of episodes was shortened to 20 minutes.

Following Dinnerbone's appearance in Season 11, a number of changes were made in snapshot 13w23a to accommodate for UHC in vanilla Minecraft. In particular, two new commands were added and the recipes of golden apples and glistering melons were modified. The two commands were /spreadplayers, used to scatter players around a specified area, and the naturalRegeneration gamerule, used to determine if health regeneration should occur when the food bar is full. The golden apple recipe was changed to require 8 gold ingots (as it was in the mod), while the glistering melon recipe was changed to require 8 gold nuggets. The same snapshot also saw changes to the regeneration status effect. Dinnerbone has clarified that the gamerule was the only feature added or changed for the purpose of implementing UHC. Guude says the addition of UHC to Minecraft is "surreal" and "awesome to see".

Due to playing in vanilla Minecraft, ghast tears have been obtainable since Season 12, though a ban on brewing of potions of regeneration was put in place. Potions of strength II have been banned since Season 16. Season 17 was played on a Bukkit server in an attempt to reduce lag by lowering the number of hostile monsters that spawn. Since Season 20, trapping Nether portals (and End portals if applicable) is not allowed.

• Guude, PauseUnpause, VintageBeef, W92Baj (S9), SethBling, BlameTC (S12), PauseUnpause, Arkas (S14), Vechs, SethBling, OMGchad (S22), and AnderZEL, W92Baj (S28) are the only teams that have won the season without losing a team member.
• Seasons 16, 20, and 21 had no PvE deaths.
